What is University of Scouting?
The University of Scouting is a one-day leader training program designed to provide ideas and resources in areas to benefit your Pack, Troop, Team or Crew. The University of Scouting is offered once a year to assist ALL Scout volunteers in their Scouting positions.
This year’s University of Scouting will be celebrating The Eagle Scout Award and the Sea Scout Centennials. We have been revising and changing the courses to be up with the times and needs of all our adult leaders whether in Cubs Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity, or Venturing. It’s a whole New Century of Scouting. It’s time for new Ideas, new thoughts, and new courses.
It will be held from 8:30 to 4;30 at Seven Hills High School, 5400 Red Bank Road on Saturday, November 3, 2012. All courses are open to all Scouters for you to choose from. Come, learn, have fun, and meet other Scouters. There will be a Midway of interesting booths to view when you are not in classes and pick up literature on Parks, activities, the Zoo, and interesting outings; and the Scout Shop will be there.
This year we have made some changes. First and Foremost we have reduced the price of registration for the event. The cost is only $20.00 to register by October 31st. But if you’re late it will be $10 more. This registration fee includes Lunch, Your Courses, The Midway, free Parking (preferred parking for car pools) and Great camaraderie.
We have also shortened the day by half an hour. But wait!!! We have more!….
We are offering some new exciting programs for 2012:

  • Scouting Conversations – Talk about Scouting Issues – Camping Experiences and dilemmas and Things that Happen in unit meetings
  • Future Plans for Camp Michaels

  • Using COPE to Benefit Your Unit
  • Leave No Trace 101 – Beyond the Simple Leave No Trace course. This will be an in depth course covering all aspects of Leave No Trace and protecting the environment. Participants will earn their Leave No Trace Awareness Card. Counts as 3 sessions
  • Light Weight Backpacking
  • High Adventure Planning (HAP)
  • High Adventure Zero Adult Ruler Discipline (HAZARS)

  • Using the Varsity Scout Program

Here are some of the old favorites from last year courses that will be a part of at the University of Scouting:
  • CPR Certification
  • Holding the Baloo Course at University of Scouting
  • Introductory Outdoor Leadership Skills Waiver for Veteran Scouters
  • Job Specific Training for all Scouting positions will be held including Den Chief Training.
  • Suggested Training Tracks so you can get the trainings you need for your level of Scouting. The Tracks will be graded from basic to advance though every course will be open to everyone.
  • We will be offering program helps for the new Cub Scout program called “Cub Scout 2010.” This course will make your Cub job much easier and more enjoyable. (We know its 2012 but they still call it “Cub Scout 2010.”)
  • Because all Scout leaders are now required to be Youth Protection Trained every two years, we will be holding this training in person at the University of Scouting.
  • We will have Outdoor Cooking in the outdoors (how novel!!!).
Who attends the University of Scouting?
All Adult Volunteers. This includes Cub Scout Leaders and Parents, Boy Scout Leaders, Venturing Leaders, Commissioners, District and Council Level Volunteers, all other Scout Volunteers as well as Scouting Professionals. General courses are offered as well as courses for specific units and positions. You do not have to be a registered Leader to participate. (Note special training has been set up for Den Chiefs, Boy Scouts and Venturers leadership training as noted below.
What will I do at University of Scouting?
You will take as many classes as you like, provided they fit into your schedule! Many classes are offered at multiple times throughout the day to allow participants flexibility with their schedules. Also, a MIDWAY will be offered with many great ideas presented by outside sponsors. Each of these experiences will help prepare you to provide a quality program for our youth.
How do I pick courses?
Check out the list of courses. There are Courses in Job Specific Training, Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity, Venturing Activities, Scout Skills and Overall Scout Enrichment. Pick courses that you are interested, pick courses that will help your unit, or take courses in a training tract. Don’t forget to pick a lunch period. If you do not pick a lunch period, no lunch will be ordered for you (except if your course bridges the C and D sessions). Work out your schedule. Be careful, some courses are more than one session long. Then register online.
Lunch will be provided if you include it in your schedule. It is to be scheduled for either the C Session or D Session.
Den Chief Training is offered at the University of Scouting.
Non-adult Den Chiefs. Boy Scouts who serve as Den Chiefs are a key part of the leadership team for Cub Scouts and an important part of the pack. Den Chief training will include games, skits, songs, and how to support the Den Leader. Den Chiefs can attend by registering for the all-day Den Chief Training being offered, but they will have to stay with the Den Chief Training and will not be able to attend any other training offered that day. Confirm your participation with your Scoutmaster and then submit a completed Den Chief Registration Form. There is no registration for this course on the day of the event.
Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops and Crews
This is also a Non-Adult course. The purpose of the Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops and Crews course is to teach youth with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. It is intended to help youth to understand their responsibilities and help to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities.
Where Will University of Scouting Be Held?
At Seven Hills High School, 5400 Red Bank Road. Registration and opening ceremony will take place in Seven Hills High School Cafeteria.
Parking - Car-Pool
Parking is free but it is strongly encouraged that you car-pool to the University of Scouting. There is limited parking. You will receive a preferential parking place if you carpool.
Registration Fee ($20.00)
Registrations not postmarked/received by October 31 will be charged an additional LATE FEE of $10 on addition to standard Registration fees.

What are the Dates & Times?
This will be an all-day event on Saturday, November 3, 2012.
7:45 AM
Registration will begin
(Free coffee and doughnuts will be provided until they run out.)
8:45 AM
Opening ceremony and general announcements in the Cafeteria.
9:15 AM


4:30 PM
Six class periods will be held on the hour beginning at 9:15 AM and ending at 4:30 PM. Each class period will be 60 minutes long with a 15 minute break to travel between class locations. Please pick a lunch period at C or D.
The last class will end at 4:30 PM, and there will be no closing ceremony.
After your last class, turn in your evaluation forms at the registration center, and you will be given a University of Scouting patch and a Web site code that will lead you to all the class materials prepared by each instructor.

To register for classes ~ please review the Course List below and select classes you would like to take. There will be six session periods during the day labeled A through F. Session Times are shown below.



Classes are ONE HOUR LONG unless otherwise noted in course description.
There will be 15 min. between classes. Classes are only offered during sessions shown - please make sure that the class you select is offered during the time you are scheduling it! Most classes are limited in size and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. You will be assigned to your selections as available.

Alternatively, you can downloard the PDF Registration Forms by clicking on the link below. Fill it out by hand, and mail in. Be sure to give 2nd & 3rd choices for your courses if you use this method. Walk-ins or late registrations will be put in open classes
